چکیده

There have been many recent articles on the coding properties of nerve cells, with emphasis on the precision and reliability of the processes involved 1−7. In our investigations of stochastic effects in nonlinear biological neuron models , we have examined especially some results obtained on the firing properties of certain neocortical cells 3 in which various currents were injected repetitively and the accompanying sequences of spike times were recorded. An interesting and seemingly paradoxical result was obtained: when a constant current was injected into the cell, a spike train was obtained which became more variable with time, whereas when a variable current waveform was repeatedly injected, practically identical spike trains were obtained in each trial. It thus seemed that variability somehow led to greater reliability because a constant input current (here called case A) led to a noisy output whereas a noisy input (here called case B) led to a fixed output pattern.

Quantal Glutamate Release Is Essential for Reliable Neuronal Encodings in Cerebral Networks

BACKGROUND The neurons and synapses work coordinately to program the brain codes of controlling cognition and behaviors. Spike patterns at the presynaptic neurons regulate synaptic transmission. The quantitative regulations of synapse dynamics in spike encoding at the postsynaptic neurons remain unclear. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS With dual whole-cell recordings at synapse-paired cells in...

Subset of thin spike cortical neurons preserve the peripheral encoding of stimulus onsets.

An important question in auditory neuroscience concerns how the neural representation of sound features changes from the periphery to the cortex. Here we focused on the encoding of sound onsets and we used a modeling approach to explore the degree to which auditory cortical neurons follow a similar envelope integration mechanism found at the auditory periphery. Our "forward" model was able to p...

Gain and fidelity of transmission patterns at cortical excitatory unitary synapses improve spike encoding.

Neuronal spike encoding and synaptic transmission in the brain need be precise and reliable for well-organized behavior and cognition. Little is known about how a unitary synapse reliably transmits presynaptic sequential spikes and how multiple unitary synapses precisely drive their postsynaptic neurons to encode spikes. To address these questions, we investigated the dynamics of glutamatergic ...

Responses of primary somatosensory cortical neurons to controlled mechanical stimulation.

The results of psychophysical studies suggest that displacement velocity may contribute significantly to the sensation of subcortical somatosensory neurons. The cortical correlates of these phenomena, however, are not known. In the present study the responses of rapidly adapting (RA) neurons in the forelimb region of cat primary somatosensory cortex (SI) to controlled displacement of skin and h...

Information Theoretical Analysis of Instantaneous Motor Cortical Neuron Encoding for Brain-Machine Interfaces

Sequential estimation algorithms based on spike trains for motor Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) require knowledge of both neuronal representation encoding of movement and movement decoding from spike train activity. In these BMIs, an instantaneous encoding estimation is necessary which is unlike the methods commonly used that are based on time windows of neural and kinematic data. An online, in...
